CHILDHOOD & SCHEDULE IMMUNISATION
Immunisations are the most important public health intervention to prevent the blowout of many diseases that cause hospitalisation in Australia today. The national immunisation program was established by the government to progress the overall health of the population and keep these significant illnesses in check. The variety of vaccinations is carefully planned into a timetable throughout a child’s life and is called the ‘National Immunisation Program Schedule’ which can be seen here.
We at Vitalia Healthcare stock all scheduled vaccines and they are provided free-of-charge from the government. As we know immunising children can sometimes be challenging, so our skilled registered nurses are present whenever we are open.
Please note, a vaccine should not be given to the patient when they are sick. If the patient is sick, please postpone having the vaccine until they are better.
It is practice policy that after the vaccine is administered, you wait for approximately 15 minutes to ensure you don’t have any adverse reactions to the vaccine. In some cases, the site of the vaccination may hurt a bit and there could be some localized redness and soreness. This is quite normal but if you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to talk to our friendly staff before leaving.
Influenza, or ‘the flu’ is a serious breathing virus that can sometimes can be lethal in a minority of cases.
Flu vaccines are developed yearly to give patients provisional immunity to the any expected strains of the influenza virus likely to appear in the winter season. It is usually made available to the public around autumn (April) and is always available here at Vitalia Healthcare for your convenience.
The government as part of their health strategy, provides free flu vaccines to patients that are vulnerable and satisfy one of the following conditions:
- Chronic conditions, eg asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, immunodeficiency etc
- Over 65 years old
- Pregnant women
If you don’t fall into one of the aforementioned categories, for your convenience we provide the private flu vaccine (covering the same strains as the government Fluvax’s) at a discounted private fee of $10; payable on the day of consult.
Note – The flu vaccination only lasts a few months so it is sometimes necessary to have a repeated flu shot if you have had a flu shot to early.
We cover basic travel vaccines at Vitalia Healthcare. An appointment with your doctor will be required to identify the appropriate vaccinations needed for your travel needs. Please note many private health insurance policies will offer a refund on the cost of travel vaccines, please check with your private insurance company to see if this applies.
